The Story Behind the Lions Design

The Lions design tells a story of old downtown Hilo and the community it serves. The illustration is not meant to be a literal architectural rendering, but rather a storytelling image that reflects Hilo’s history, spirit, and sense of place.

In the foreground are recognizable elements of Hilo town, including the Hata Building and the pink Catholic Church on Haili Street, symbolizing faith, heritage, and the generations that have shaped the town. These structures represent the everyday lives of the people the Lions serve and the importance of remaining grounded in community.

The Wainaku Bridge, credited to William Chun, is included as a symbol of connection — linking people, places, and generations. It reflects the Lions’ role in bringing communities together and supporting progress while honoring legacy.

Rising behind Hilo are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, standing as quiet guardians of the town. The mountains represent strength, protection, wisdom, and cultural significance. Their presence in the background reflects leadership that is steady and enduring, not loud or imposing.

Above the scene is the crescent moon, which holds multiple meanings. It represents the Hilo Crescent City Lions, the shape of Hilo Bay, and Hilo’s historical nickname, the “Crescent City.” The crescent moon also symbolizes guidance, reflection, and light — leadership that provides direction without overpowering.

Together, these elements form a single visual narrative of service rooted in place. The design reflects humility, connection, and responsibility — reminding us that Lions serve not from above, but from within the community.

The logo was designed by Geoli Ng, a member of the Hilo Crescent City Lions and a director of the Waiakea Waters / Waiakea Kokua Initiative. Her work captures the essence of Hilo and the Lions’ mission through a thoughtful, culturally grounded illustration that tells a story rather than displaying a symbol of dominance
